Coffee, the Killers, and the World Cup

Do you ever think about a particular thing you like and try to remember when it was and what it was that sparked this particular interest?  I was thinking about this today as I was waiting for a cup of coffee.  I got into my office this morning, and someone was in the middle of making a fresh pot of coffee, which meant I would have to wait.  It was harder than most mornings to wait for my cup of coffee.  I was dragging something aweful today.

Anyway, as I was waiting for the coffee to brew, I started thinking about how I had become so dependant on coffee.  Now, I'm not a coffee addict like some people are.  Usually, one cup of coffee (sometimes half a cup) in the morning is enough to wake me up.  Then I started thinking about when I first started drinking coffee.  I didn't grow up in a house of coffee drinkers, so I was 18 before I had my first cup of coffee.  I remember that I was a freshman in college home on Christmas break.  My 7th grade teacher invited me to spend the afternoon with her at a coffee shop.  I didn't actually drink straight coffee; it was a capuccino or a latte or something like that, but it had coffee in it.  And I felt very very grown up.  Here I was sitting with someone who had taught me when I was 12, and she was treating me like an adult.  After that, I started mixing coffee with hot chocolate in my college cafeteria.  It was only a matter of time until coffee became a regular part of my life.  As a side note, this teacher taught me how to take excellent notes in class, and I credit her with the fact that I did well in college.

Thinking about my first encounter with coffee got me to thinking about other things that are attached to a very distinct memory of the first time I got into them.  I really like the band the Killers, and I first started listening to them during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, thanks to a Nike commercial featuring the song "All These Things that I've Done".  You know the one I'm talking about -- "I've got soul, but I'm not a soldier".  The first time I
heard that song I was like, how have I never heard this song before???  I had heard the Killers before with songs like "Mr. Brightside" and "Somebody Told Me", but I can't say I was impressed.  But this song. . . it's just perfect.  Maybe it's because I heard it during the Olympics where Micheal Phelps won like 3,000 gold medals.  Also, wasn't that the same Olympics where the French men's swim team were trash talking the Americans, and then we beat them in a relay race by a hair?  That song is just the perfect anthem.  I love the Olympics anyway because the whole world comes together in support of their country, and everyone is filled with pride.  Anyway, after that I thought the Killers were alright (in a good way, not an average way.)

Speaking of world sporting events, I never cared about the World Cup until I lived in Mexico.  I was living there during the 2010 World Cup, and it's hard to live in a country where soccer (or futbol) is super popular and not watch the World Cup.  Once during a game in which Mexico was playing, I was in my room not watching the game, but when Mexico scored I could hear people on the street cheering.  I did try to watch a few games and even got up early to watch Mexico play. (For some reason, I was more interested in Mexico playing than my own country.) But honestly, I thought soccer was boring, which I know is so uncool to say.  Score a freaking goal already!  However, even if I don't watch more 5 minutes of a game, I will continue to follow Mexico when they play in the World Cup.  (Also, I started listening to K'naan after his song "Wavin' Flag" was everywhere during the World Cup.)

Anyway, that's what I was thinking about while waiting for my coffee.
